Rom Breaks A Record

Four-goal Romelu Lukaku revealed how Everton’s players had discussed the need for a quick start against Bournemouth before he netted the fastest Premier League goal ever witnessed at Goodison Park.

The striker broke the deadlock with a stunning left-foot shot after just 30 seconds and went on to score four times as the Blues recorded a 6-3 victory to extend their unbeaten league run to seven games.

Lukaku’s haul moved him to within one strike of Duncan Ferguson’s record of scoring 60 times for Everton in the Premier League - though it took his third and fourth goals to put daylight between the sides after a Joshua King brace had narrowed the scoreline to 3-2 after the break.

“We spoke in the dressing room before the game and said that we needed to come out flying,” said Lukaku, who ended the day as the Premier League’s top scorer with 16 goals. “We’d worked on it on the training ground all week as well. The players were sharp and it was good to score after 30 seconds.

“We continued pressing and playing good football going forward. To be 3-0 up at half-time was good and we knew that we had to be mentally sharp. Unfortunately, we weren’t and that allowed them back into the game, and that was poor from us.

“We need to look back at the goals we conceded because if we want to improve, we need to get rid of those little problems.

“But there was no lack of confidence. We have a lot of confidence in our ability, we know hard work pays off and that’s what we did.”

The win moved Everton to within two points of sixth-placed Manchester United in the Premier League table, with Jose Mourinho’s side set to travel to champions Leicester City on Sunday.

“You have to believe that you can catch the team ahead of you,” added Lukaku. “We need to win games, keep winning, keep working hard and believe we can catch Manchester United - and maybe the team above them as well.”
